Many of our sprinkler, or lawn problem, service calls this time of year (Winter) are people complaining that they need their sprinklers repaired because they have “dry spots”. They have watered and watered….. and it just won’t turn green. Most of the time the reason for this is the summer grasses, or weed grasses (Bermuda/Crabgrass) have gone dormant for the winter. These areas will not “green-up” until the weather warms up in the spring regardless of how much water you apply to those areas. Over-watering your entire lawn because of these “brown patches” is not a very good use of our water resources!
Suggestion: If this occurs during the winter season. Look closely at the blades of grass. Are they different in texture and shape than the green areas of grass? if so, they are probably warm season grasses mixed in with your “Tall Fescue” lawn. When the weather warms up, these grasses will likley turn from brown to green. If you are tired of dealing with these un-wanted grasses (Weeds) and want a year-round green lawn that does not require watering, Try our New Synthetic (Fake) Grasses, or Artificial grass. Still want to be water-wise? Try combining the artificial grass with some nice Native Plants, or drought tolerant Landscape Designs.
